COAL MINE

Prairie State's Lively Grove coal mine mines a part of the Herrin 6 seam. The coal mine is the only source of coal for the campus and will mine nearly 7 million tons each year.
Continuous mining methods are employed using room and pillar methods.
Prairie State significantly reduces its carbon footprint by transporting coal from Lively Grove mine to our adjacent power plant instead of by rail from the Powder River Basin.
