COAL MINE
- Prairie State's Lively Grove coal mine mines a part of the Herrin 6 seam. The coal mine is the only source of coal for the campus and will mine nearly 7 million tons each year.
- Continuous mining methods are employed using room and pillar methods.
- Prairie State significantly reduces its carbon footprint by transporting coal from Lively Grove mine to our adjacent power plant instead of by rail from the Powder River Basin.
