November 17, 2009

A 422-ton part of generator transformer will be slowly transported through a rural section of southeastern St. Clair County and into Washington County.

Beginning Tuesday, the equipment will be hauled about 1 mph for 14 miles from the Kaskaskia River to the Prairie State Energy Campus, near Lively Grove.

Through Thursday, the load will travel east down Pike Sawmill-Baer Road, then north on Baldwin Road, then east on Schaller Road and north onto Winter Road, which turns into Main Street and runs right through Lenzburg. The convoy will then continue east onto Illinois 13 and then further east on Lenzburg Road East before turning south on Illinois 4 and finally east on New Marigold Road to the power plant.

This will be the second heavy haul that restricts traffic. Last month, a 443-ton piece of the plant's generator was transported over the course of a couple days.

The equipment is headed to a 1,600-megawatt, coal-fired power plant that will be powered by two 800-megawatt generating units. The first is expected to be in operation by summer 2011 and the second, a year later.

The power plant has a coal mine on site and advanced environmental control technologies to generate enough electricity to serve approximately 2.5 million families in at least nine states.
