Illinois is a big state. Sometimes people in the Chicago area forget that there is a lot of land and a lot of people south of Interstate 80. One project under the radar that shouldn’t be is the on-going construction of the Prairie State Energy Campus southeast of St. Louis in Washington County– specifically the 1,600 MW, $4 billion coal-fueled power plant and adjacent coal mine. This powerpoint presentation showcases the construction of the plant , the jobs it’s creating during construction and will create when operating and the environmental advances being made.

One fun fact — because the plant is able to use Illinois coal from a mine next to the plant, it’s saving 200,000 tons of CO2 emmissions because it’s not shipping coal from Wyoming.

Another fun fact — this is the largest power plant construction project in the country right now.

Imagine what Illinois’ unemployment rate would be if this project wasn’t being built!
