Welcome to the website of Prairie State Energy Campus.

The Prairie State Energy Campus (PSEC) is the result of visionary thinking and action by eight (8) public power agencies and the world’s largest coal company to meet the growing demand for electricity of our customer-owners.  It represents one of the largest energy projects currently under construction in the United States and serves as a wonderful example of how legislators, regulators, public power agencies, corporations, and communities can work together to provide a domestic, cost effective, and environmentally friendly supply of energy to our owners and the communities they serve.  This low cost, environmentally friendly supply of energy will serve to not only strengthen, but also further position the economies of our member communities for future growth.

The PSEC is comprised of a 1,600 megawatt coal-fired power plant and adjacent underground coal mine.  We anticipate achieving commercial operations of the first of the two (2) 800 MW generating units in the fourth quarter of 2011, and the second in the third quarter of 2012.

The PSEC represents a major undertaking of power generation and coal mining in this country. Total cost for development and construction of the PSEC is projected at approximately $4 billion. As such, the project is making a significant, positive, economic impact on the local/regional area of southwest Illinois and will continue to do so in the years to come.

The power plant will use a domestic fuel source and deploy advanced environmental control technologies to generate enough electricity to serve approximately 2.5 million families covering at least nine states in an environmentally friendly manner.  The Campus’ mine mouth design and use of supercritical steam generating technology give it an efficiency advantage resulting in a reduction of its overall carbon footprint when compared to a typical coal plant in our Country’s fleet.

As the Chairman of the Management Committee, and President and CEO of the Prairie State Generating Company - LLC, we dedicate ourselves to ensuring that the Prairie State Energy Campus is built on time and within budget.  We are very pleased with the cooperative efforts of all the project partners and that of the community.  This cooperative environment will ensure our success.

We are pleased that you have shown interest in the PSEC and hope you will continue to follow the progress of this important project.
